About Us

Our Story

Aweksha (meaning ‘care’ in Sanskrit) is a Bengaluru-based women’s trust founded in 2021. New only by name, our leadership team is equipped with 45 years of grassroots-level experience in gender justice. Working towards ending Gender-based Violence (GBV) with a particular emphasis on Violence Against Women (VAW), Aweksha’s primary focus is on the creation of resilient feminist networks that act as support systems for survivors of abuse. To this end, our work is aimed at building trauma-informed safe spaces that can promote healing and recovery, as well as combating gender-based violence through crisis intervention, research, capacity-building and advocacy.

Since our inception in 2021, we have provided various forms of support to over 1100 survivors of violence, including domestic violence, sexual harassment at the workplace, rape, family violence, burn attacks and child sexual abuse.

Theory of Change

Aweksha believes that violence against women is systemic in nature and a major public health concern. While the mainstream understanding of VAW is usually limited to physical abuse, it can also take the form of psychological, emotional, financial, sexual and cyber violence. Moreover, in cases of domestic and family violence, socio-cultural norms focus on the sanctity of marriage and family ties, thus enabling the abuser and continuing the cycle of violence. We recognise that this cycle can be traumatic, isolating and difficult to break due to a lack of survivor-focused support systems.

In line with this, our work is built around a survivor-centric, process-driven and holistic approach that prioritises the needs of the survivor and provides necessary assistance to ensure that they feel empowered to make the best choices for themselves. Our hope is that the work that we are doing will strengthen the collective resistance to violence as well as make larger systemic changes in society so justice is within reach for all.
