Outreach and Community Engagement
What we do
Our outreach activities are at the heart of our work, helping us connect with survivors of violence, bring visibility to gender-based violence to a wider audience and create real systemic and behavioural change. In this regard, we also regularly conduct outreach events to mark and commemorate days of import for women across the world such as International Women’s Day on March 8th.

Our Projects
In 2022, Aweksha produced a documentary titled 'Kidi - A Spark,' which sheds light on survivors of burn attacks seeking treatment at Victoria Hospital. The documentary comprises poignant conversations with these survivors, uncovering the disturbing nature of these incidents and their struggles with rebuilding their lives in the aftermath. In the documentary, they share harrowing accounts of the excruciating pain resulting from their injuries, the limitations imposed on their mobility, the disfigurement they must bear, and their financial dependence on their partners. These forces collectively conspire to relegate them to the fringes of society. Despite these overwhelmingly unfavourable circumstances, the women featured in Aweksha's documentary exemplify remarkable resilience and strength.

There are very few legal remedies available to survivors of domestic violence. One of them is Section 498A of the IPC (Sec 85 and 86 of the BNS), which has been rendered practically ineffective by the criminal justice system due to judicial misinterpretation of the law, red-tapism and procedural delays. As a result, most women who experience violence are trapped in an endless cycle of suffering and cruelty. Aweksha’s documentary on this legislation will serve as material evidence of the pain and suffering of the women who experience violence, who then find themselves fighting an impossible battle with the justice system when they choose to take action. Our hope is the documentary gives due legitimacy to women’s experiences of violence and is a wakeup call for everyone within the justice system to believe women while they are still alive.

Legal Handbook
Our legal handbook has been designed to help women navigate the complex web of laws, legal procedures, and public systems. It addresses key topics such as marriage, divorce, domestic violence, maintenance, and child custody, empowering women with knowledge of their rights, best practices, and necessary steps to take to avoid being further victimised by the legal process. By producing this handbook, our goal is to equip women with the confidence and understanding they need to remain strong and steadfast during difficult legal proceedings such as court cases, custody hearings etc.
