What we do

Aweksha undertakes action research to further our understanding of gender-based violence and the legal frameworks associated with it. Our research also seeks to elucidate the needs and challenges of survivors of violence, and the potential strategies and recommendations that an organisation such as ours can employ to improve our standard of care.

Our Projects

The Law and its limitations: 498A

In 2024, Aweksha undertook comprehensive study on the application and limitations of the following laws - Sections 498A, 304B, 306 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. We believe that 498A in particular has been seminal for the women's rights movement in India for its criminalisation of domestic violence and through the study, sought out to challenge the narrative of misuse that is often associated with it. Ultimately, the study provides a nuanced approach to addressing DV that goes beyond the law-or-nothing framework and underscores the need to take alternatives to law seriously.
