Policy Change and Advocacy
What we do
Our advocacy work is aimed at making larger systemic changes in the legal and policy frameworks governing violence against women, and domestic violence in particular, with the intention of ensuring proper and timely implementation of legislation.

Our Projects
Following a study conducted in 2017, we are currently working at building an advocacy campaign focused on Sections 85 and 86 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (erstwhile Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code), which criminalises cruelty towards a married woman by her husband and/or his relatives. Our campaign is designed to counter the dominant and inaccurate narrative of misuse that is weaponised to weaken the law’s implementation. We also plan to file a Public Interest Litigation at the Karnataka High Court in order to urge the courts to challenge the dilution of these laws.

The #BeBetterTogether campaign focuses on collective action and community participation to bring an end to the silent pandemic of domestic violence. We aim to challenge the idea that survivors must endure their suffering quietly to keep the rest of society in the dark. Instead, we believe that we must all come together, build a community of care and a safe network for survivors, and strengthen our unified resistance against violence as it is our collective responsibility to end it. Follow us on social media to stay up to date with the campaign.

Burns Policy
Since 2015, we have been advocating for the inclusion of burns survivors as persons with disabilities through the adoption of a Burns Policy that our team has drafted in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of experts including medical professionals and social workers. The policy has been submitted to the Chief Minister of the state of Karnataka 4 times and with the help of supporting Members of the Legislative Assembly, efforts are ongoing to see it through to implementation. We have also been carrying out sustained advocacy with the government to implement stricter rules and timelines regarding domestic violence cases.
